New Essay on Civic Participation in Hawaii

CSC’s Pete Peterson posted this essay to City Journal Online about an amazing story currently taking place on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Edited out of the original essay is the fact that the volunteer effort was begun after a failed “civic engagement” effort led by the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources.

In February/March they came out to the island to convene a workshop around how residents could lobby the State Government to pass a new spending bill for the parks department. Exasperated, local residents worked together to produce one of the more heartwarming volunteer projects in recent memory.
